TRAIL GUIDE NEWSLETTER - JULY, 2007

GET AWAY DURING YOUR GETAWAY!

Many times you'll hear from people on our forums or other email lists, and they'll talk about how crowded Rocky Mountain National Park and Estes Park can be. It can be confusing trying to figure out how crowded the park actually is since it's such a subjective observation. First of all, you have to wonder what they use to gauge what "crowded" really is. Do they compare it to other national parks? Or do they compare it to their local city park?

However you decide what "crowded" is to you, you can get away from crowds in a couple of ways. First, try to avoid the busiest times of year, like the Fourth of July and the elk rut mania in the fall. Also, whenever you are there, you can get away from the crowds of any size by making use of the park's extensive trail system. This is especially true of trails outside of the Bear Lake/Glacier Gorge trail system. This is actually the best way to experience the park! So if you find that your summer getaway to RMNP hasn't quite gotten you away from people, cars, tourons, and the like, then hit the trails! Try a hike in the Wild Basin. Head out to Ouzel Falls; and, if you've got energy, you can continue on to many lakes past there such as Ouzel Lake, Bluebird Lake or Thunder Lake, depending on how much effort you want to put in on the trails.

Enjoy your summer in the park, everyone!

TRAIL RIDGE ROAD UPDATE

Recent visitors to Rocky Mountain National Park report that work on Trail Ridge Road is progressing well. According to more that one forums contributor, wait time has been minimal in the construction area.

Old Fall River Road is now open, too. Conditions are reported to be very good.
